Fishponds' inter-war semis take monocouche cleanly — sound brickwork, no movement, and the local vernacular (cream and white through-colour) suits monocouche's natural finish. We usually recommend K Rend or Weber here as both have Bristol-area stockists for short lead times.

Monocouche is a through-colour mineral render — limestone aggregate, Portland cement, pigments, and additives — applied in a single 12-18mm coat and then scraped back to expose the aggregate for a textured finish. The colour goes all the way through, so unlike paint there's no top coat to maintain. Monocouche is harder-wearing than silicone (more impact-resistant, great for parking areas and alleyways), cheaper, and gives a contemporary scraped or dragged finish that's popular on modern Bristol homes. Fishponds is a long suburb running along the Frome Valley between Eastville and Downend. The western end (closer to the city centre) has the older 1930s semis on streets like Stapleton Road and the Frome Valley Road, while the eastern end has the larger post-war council estates — particularly the estates around the old Stapleton Road hospital and the new-build infill. Many of the council properties were re-rendered in the 1990s with acrylic systems that are now failing. We work on a lot of these — typically strip and re-render with a BBA-approved silicone system.
