How it works

Our Process

Every plastering services project follows the same 8-12 step process. Here's what to expect from your free site visit to your 12-month aftercare check.

  1. 01Free site visit

We visit, assess the surfaces, take measurements, and discuss the finish you want (smooth, tyrolean, textured).

  2. 02Fixed written quote

    Detailed quote within 48 hours.

  3. 03Surface preparation

Remove old failed plaster back to sound substrate. Hack out loose material. Treat any contamination.

  4. 04Boarding (where needed)

Stud walls and ceilings boarded with plasterboard, joints taped and scrimmed ready for skim.

  5. 05Scratch coat (where needed)

For deeper plastering or backing plaster for tiling, a scratch coat is applied first.

  6. 06Skim coat

Final skim coat applied — 2-3mm of multifinish plaster, trowelled to a smooth finish. Airless spray option available for large projects.

  7. 07Curing

Plaster needs to dry before painting — typically 3-7 days depending on thickness, temperature and humidity.

  8. 08Final walk-around

We do a final walk-around with you, identify any snags, and leave the house clean.

  9. 09Aftercare guide

Kyran responded quickly to my request for a quote, and then followed up with a decent job at my flat. He kept me in the picture, and cleaned up after he finished. I would definitely recommend Kyran for any plastering & rendering work.

We had Kyran from K D Plastering carry out work in our kitchen / dining area, he worked flawlessly from an early start to the end of the day to get the job done, absolutely over the moon with the end product, superb quality and a fantastic end finish. Great communication from Kyran and we will definitely use him again for any future projects.

We got in touch on Saturday as we urgently needed plastering finished in our bathroom. We had a very quick response and Kyran was around at 8am on Sunday to get it done. He finished in just a few hours and the standard seems very good. He tidied up after himself too! We were pleased with the price considering the last minute nature of the work.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our plastering services service.

How long does plastering take to dry?

A 2-3mm skim coat typically takes 3-7 days to dry fully, depending on temperature, humidity and ventilation. We don't recommend painting for at least 7 days after plastering — painting too early can cause the paint to flake. We provide an aftercare guide with every project explaining drying times for your specific conditions.

Do you do airless spray plastering?

Yes — airless spray plastering is one of our specialties. It's ideal for large projects (full house re-skims, new-builds, extensions) where the speed advantage really matters. A full 3-bed house can be plastered in 1-2 days with airless spray, compared with 4-6 days for hand trowel. The finish is slightly different (a fine stippled texture) but equally paint-ready.

Can you plaster over Artex?

Yes, in most cases. We can either scrape back the high points of the Artex and skim over the top, or bond and skim over the whole ceiling for a perfectly flat modern finish. We can also remove Artex back to the original surface if needed. Note that some older Artex (pre-1980s) may contain asbestos — we can test and refer a specialist if needed.

Do you handle damp-related plastering?

Yes — but only after the damp issue itself has been diagnosed and treated. We use Thistle Dri-Coat or similar renovating plasters that allow walls to dry out without re-forming salts. We can advise on whether you need a damp specialist first.

Can I live in the house during plastering?

For most plastering jobs (single room, patching) yes, you can stay in the house. For full house re-skims we recommend finding alternative accommodation for 2-3 days while the plaster dries — there's no smell but the work area needs to be kept warm and ventilated.

Do you plaster extensions and loft conversions?

Yes — extensions and loft conversions are regular work for us. We can board and skim, apply backing plaster for tiling, or do full decorative finishes. We work alongside your builder or architect and can quote at any stage of the build.

What's the difference between bonding plaster and skim?

Bonding plaster is the base coat applied to bare brick or blockwork — typically 8-15mm thick. Skim plaster is the final 2-3mm coat applied over bonding (or over plasterboard) to give a smooth paint-ready finish. Most plastering jobs use both.

Can you repair cracked plaster?

Yes — hairline cracks can be filled and reskimmed. Larger cracks may indicate structural movement that needs separate diagnosis. We can advise on the right approach during the site visit.

How much does plastering cost?

It depends on the area, the condition of the existing surface and whether ceilings are included. A single room, a full house re-skim and a patch repair are very different jobs. Every quote is fixed and written after a free site visit.

What warranty do you provide?

5-year workmanship warranty on all internal plastering. British Gypsum, Knauf and Thistle products carry their own manufacturer warranties. £10m public liability insurance as standard.
